Hey all!
I realize I am posting twice in one day, but I thought I'd answer a couple frequently asked questions. :)
How long will it take/ why is it so long?
We expect it to take around 2 years from application to traveling to Thailand. The reason for the time frame is because it will take around 3-4 months to complete the home study and finish the dossier. Once the dossier is complete and in Thailand, we will be placed on the waiting list for a referral. It may take around 12 months until we receive a referral, depending on how many people are ahead of us on the list and how many referrals they get from Thailand each quarter. After we get a referral, it may take around 9 months to get all the legal stuff taken care of in Thailand and the United States. After that happens, we will be able to go pick him/her up. With Thailand, the adoption isn't finalized until around 6 months after you bring them home. So, possibly two years until we travel to get him/her and another 6 months after that until the adoption is finalized in the US courts.
Are you adopting a girl or boy?
A lot of international adoption programs are requiring that adoptive parents be open to either gender unless they already have only boys or only girls. This is because people seem to favor adopting girls and often there are more boys available to adopt than girls. But, in any case, we would have chosen either gender. We can't choose with biological children, so especially with our first child, we see no need to specify. :)
With Thailand, we are told that the gender ratio is pretty even. So there's a pretty equal chance of getting referred either a girl or a boy.
