One Month Down

Hard to believe, but it has already been a month since we saw our son's face for the first time! Hopefully we only have 8-9 months to go before we can meet him!

So far, the wait hasn't been that hard, but we have been busy. We got the paperwork done for our home study update and put it in the mail on June 15th. Now we are just waiting on our social worker to schedule the home visit. Hopefully the update will be finished sometime in July.

We've also been busy working around the house. We cleaned out the closet in Chat's room and did some much needed organizing. This past weekend we decided on a shade of green for the room and bought paint! We'll probably start on that project this weekend.

The other big thing we did over the weekend was touring Babies R Us and Target to get ideas about what toddlers need. :) We basically walked through the whole store (at Babies R Us) and wrote down anything that we thought a toddler would need (Stroller, video baby monitor, plastic plates and bowls, child carrier, carseat, etc.). It was pretty overwhelming, but fun too. There is definitely a lot of stuff in those stores that you don't really need. We'll probably take the approach of buying the necessary things before we go, but waiting to add things we aren't sure we need, if we need them. :) Also, the things that may be more of a child's preference. For example, it sounds like we will get some of Chat's bottles/sippy cups when we get custody. So, we will wait to buy any here until we know what he is used to.

One thing I did do was start a list of children's books that other familes have recommended and that I'd like to have. :) It will be fun to add to that list. Anybody have suggestions?

Did someone say books? : ) We love the Winnie the Pooh poems by A. A. Milne. Every child should have Beatrix Potter read to them. Rumble in the Jungle and Commotion in the Ocean are catchy and humorous. I just discovered the most gorgeous books to have in your child's library to read over and over again and look at the beautiful pictures. All allegories by R. C. Sproul: The King w/o a Shadow; The Lightlings; The Prince's Poison Cup; The Barber Who Wanted to Pray; The Donkey Who Carried a King.
As far as your shopping: We found it very handy to have a plastic bib for each child that we could easily wash in hotel rooms. I like to have a bath toy, too. We used a set of plastic balls with a suction cup hoop in the bath and had lots of fun. I think Chat might be too big for a carrier, but it sounds like you're putting together a good list and leaving out all of the items that just end up taking up space. Wise, but oh so hard, to wait to get things other than essentials after you get home. How exciting to be buying things and getting his room set up.

That is a good list, I had forgotten to add Beatrix Potter. :)

If you get a carrier, go with the Ergo carrier (it's great for wearing them on your back or the front; I carry Rachel Anne in it on my back and put the boys in the double stroller, and she's 3 years old); it has a really high weight limit and is super comfy even for hiking long periods of time.

Books--Curious George, "The Big Picture Story Bible" by David Helm, Dr. Seuss books, The Little Engine that Could, Make Way for Ducklings, Blueberries for Sal...

The Ergo is the one we are looking at. Good to hear it works well! :) Thanks for the book suggestions!

And get the Ergo off craigslist if you can--they're pretty expensive new. :-)

One of my favorite adoption books is "A Mother for Choco." Eric Carle books are always a favorite along with the Bill Martin Jr. books like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom". My favorite children's bible is "The Jesus Storybook Bible". I love reading it!!!

We like The Big Picture Story Bible, too. Also, Make Way for Ducklings and other Robert McCloskey books. So you have at least two votes for those : ).
