Parenting Practice

This past weekend we got the opportunity to practice our parenting skills by babysitting a friend's three year old and ten year old for the entire weekend. :) It was a whole lot of fun and I think we both are even more anxious for Chat to come home now.

On Saturday we got to enjoy a Ranch Party with our church. A family in the church that owns a ranch volunteered their property, horses, etc for the party and it was great fun! There was horseback riding, hay rides, shooting, a sandbox for the kids, hot dog roast, etc. It was even more fun with kids. I got to take the little boy on a horseback ride twice. :)

Robby got to take the girl shooting. I know he had fun helping out with that. (Yes, I am purposefully choosing pictures with the kids' faces obscured in case you were wondering.) ;)

Church was good, though I was a little worried that we would forget to pick up the kids afterwards since we don't usually have to do that. We didn't forget, though I did almost walk off with the beeper for the nursery. :)

We had a picnic at a park with another family for dinner and not only was it fun, but we left with two bags of hand me down clothes for Chat. :)

Some fun things we learned from the little boy were that there are apparently fairies in "God Bless America" and lots of mountains and oceans. :) He sings very enthusiastically. Another fun thing was that he kept asking us to play the "God is Not Dead" song by the Newsboys, but we had the radio on and don't own the song. The first time he asked for it, the song was actually the next one to play on the radio! I think that made him think that we could control the radio, because he kept asking for it all weekend long. :)

Overall, the weekend was great and the worst part was actually our dog, Haku. Usually he settles in pretty well in strange places and sleeps soundly with us, but for some reason he never relaxed at their house. So, the first night he would periodically wake up and pace around the bed, which kept waking us up. It was a pain, but we were able to get him to lay down again each time.

The second night, he woke up at 4am and decided that we were all done sleeping. We took him outside a couple of times and tried to get him to sleep, but all he wanted to do was pace around on the bed or on the floor. We finally just went back to sleep and let him pace on the floor for the rest of the night, but not before we had lost over a good hour of sleep. I guess it just prepared us better for parenting Chat in Thailand. I am sure we will be very sleep deprived during the first few weeks at least.

After the poor sleep, I took pleasure in letting the little boy keep locking Haku in his pen. :) Payback!

We weren't expecting payment for babysitting, especially since it was mostly just fun, but our friend surprised us by buying us a stroller from our registry! Can't wait to use it! :)
